HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Freshman midfielder Naomi Waithira was the only Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer player to earn first-team All-Region VI status when the 2018 teams were announced on Monday.
Waithira was one of five Blue Dragons to earn all-Region honors. Brailey Moeder, Ashley Venegas, Hailey Burke and Taylor Camp all made the second team.
All five Blue Dragons earned first-team All-Jayhawk West honors last week.
Waithira, a freshman from Nairobi, Kenya, was one of the top playmakers in the region this season with 15 assists, tying for the sixth-most assists in 2018. She also had four goals for 23 total points this season.
Her 15 assists tied for the second most by a Blue Dragon freshman and tied four others for the sixth most assists in Hutchinson single-season history.
Waithira had four multi-assist games and a season-high three against Northwest Tech on September 29.
Waithira helped the Blue Dragons to a 13-3-1 record this past season.
BRAILEY MOEDER – 2nd team (sophomore, Hutchinson, KS)
Moeder was Hutchinson’s leading scorer with 41 points and tied for the team lead with 14 goals. She was second on the team with 13 assists. Moeder connected on all three of her penalty kick attempts this season. She had two hat tricks with three goals each against North Iowa Area and Cloud County, where she achieved that hat trick in a school-record 5 minutes, 4 seconds.
ASHLEY VENEGAS – 2nd team (freshman, Odessa, TX)
Once injuries started to take their toll on the Blue Dragon front line this season, Venegas became another scoring option. She finished with a team-high-tying 14 goals and seven assists for 35 points. Venegas had a stretch of scoring goals in 8 of 9 games where she had 10 goals and 26 points. She had a two-goal, three-assist game against Hesston on October 10.
HAILEY BURKE – 2nd team (sophomore, Topeka, KS)
Burke was solid performance on the best defensive team in the Jayhawk in 2018. Hutch allowed just 17 goals this season. Burke also played a key role on Blue Dragon set pieces where she connected on two headers for goals and had one assist this season.
TAYLOR CAMP – 2nd team (freshman, Waxahachie, TX)
Camp posted a record of 12-3-1 in her freshman season with nine shutouts. She had 46 saves and a goals-against average of 1.05 in 1,460 total minutes played. She had a save percentage of .730. Some of her best saves this season came in a 4-3 come-from-behind win at Cloud County where after Hutch took the lead with 10:29 to play, Camp stopped 1 of 2 penalty kicks and faced several other direct free kicks from dangerous areas just outside the penalty box to preserve the victory.
