NEWTON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawks snapped a 7-game losing streak and started a winning streak of their own by sweeping Newton 5-0, 6-4 in baseball action at Newton’s Centennial Park Klein-Scott Field Tuesday evening. Ryan Cherry pitched a 3-hit shutout in Game 1. He struck out eight in the win.
Hutchinson scored runs in the first, fifth and seventh while shutting out Newton. Senior Jackson Wells broke out of a brief slump by going 4-4, all singles. Wells drove in a run and scored a run. Senior Garrett Davis added two hits and an RBI. Sophomore Kaden Goldsmith also drove in two runs.
In Game 2, Hutchinson jumped on Newton pitcher Matt Edlridge for 6 runs in the first three innings to lead 6-0 before Newton rallied to pull within 2 at 6-4. Sophomore Bennett Turner went 5 2/3 innings and got the win. Sophomore Jarrod Stoffel came on in relief and got the save.
Kaden Goldsmith drove in two runs for Hutchinson. Korey Holmberg and Cherry each went 3 for 4 hitting with an RBI. Jackson Wells went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Carter Booe went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Dallas Chambers went 3 for 4 at the plate as well.
Hutchinson’s record is now 5-9 and host Salina South at Hobart-Detter Field in Carey Park Friday. Newton falls to 1-11.
