County commission to take up solar regs Wednesday

Posted May 06, 2024 10:15 AM

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners will take up directing staff regarding solar regulations at their meeting on Wednesday.

According to agenda documents, at this time, the solar moratorium is in place for all areas of Reno County for large commercial solar, for private (residential/business) that are not on rooftops, and limited scale solar in unzoned areas.

The purpose of the agenda item is for the commission to give guidance for the planning commission on commercial solar projects within the zoned portion of the county.

For the un-zoned area, meetings are being planned to receive input from residents.

In the zoned area, the commission has adopted regulations on small scale commercial projects, and the planning commission is close to making its recommendation on private solar regulations.

The planning commission needs guidance on whether it should consider a ban on commercial scale solar projects in the zoned area, or if the commissioners want them to draft regulations to allow commercial projects to be developed.

With this direction, the county can eventually close out the solar regulations in the zoned portion of Reno County and once that is complete turn the focus to the rest of the county.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.
