SALINE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 12:30a.m. Friday in Salina.

According to Salina Police Department Sgt. Chad McCary, a 2012 Jaguar driven by a 21-year-old woman was southbound on Belmont, "at a high speed."  The driver tried to negotiate the curve, couldn't and struck the west curb and hit an Evergy power pole on the southwest corner of Mayfair and Belmont.

The impact severed the power pole from its base in the ground. The car then rotated and struck a tree.

Emergency services pronounced the driver dead at the scene. The front-seat passenger was extricated from the car and  transported to Salina Regional Health Center, where she remains in critical condition, according to McCary.

Police are unsure if the passenger was wearing a seatbelt, but emergency responders found the driver with a seatbelt in place. The crash remains under investigation.
