RENO COUNTY — According to Captain Steve Lutz with the Reno County Sheriff's Office, deputies and staff from the Hutchinson Animal Shelter removed 49 animals from a Nickerson residence late last week.

The removal stemmed from a call to check welfare on animals on April 11.

Sheriff's officers tried to contact someone that day, but couldn't get a hold of anyone. They finally contacted a person who left the home the next day.

A search warrant was served and a total of 49 animals were taken out of the residence. The details of the case are being sent to the Reno County Attorney's Office for review.

All animals taken in are being treated for upper respiratory sickness and being evaluated for other diseases. Some of the animals were microchipped, and if those owners can be found, they will be notified.
