Mystik Dan wins 150th Kentucky Derby by a nose in a 3-horse photo finish at Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Mystik Dan won the 150th Kentucky Derby in a photo finish, edging out Sierra Leone and Forever Young for the upset victory. Sent off at 18-1 odds, Mystik Dan and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. rode the rail down the stretch with a short lead. Sierra Leone and Forever Young from Japan gave chase and pressured the leader to the wire in front of 156,710 at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Hernandez and trainer Kenny McPeek had teamed to win the Kentucky Oaks for fillies a day earlier with Thorpedo Anna. Mystik Dan ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.34 and paid $39.22 to win.

Kentucky Derby fans pack the track for the 150th Run for the Roses

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Fans packed into Churchill Downs Saturday for the 150th Kentucky Derby, the longest continuously held sporting event in the country, and many said they felt the milestone made race day feel extra special this year. Some said that as they approached the track, they imagined what Churchill Downs must have been at that first race on May 17, 1875, when patrons arrived to watch the horses by riding horses there themselves. The 150th Run for the Roses would be unrecognizable to the 10,000 people who attended that first race. More than 157,000 arrived at Churchill Down from all over the United States for a dayslong spectacle of huge hats and mint juleps.

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge ejected for first time in his career

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was ejected for the first time in his career when he argued a called third strike by plate umpire Ryan Blakney in the seventh inning of Saturday's game against the Detroit Tigers. With one out, Judge took a full count fastball from Tyler Holton that he thought was slightly outside. Blakney rang him up, Judge glanced back and was ejected. After starting to walk back to the dugout, Judge returned to argue the call and manager Aaron Boone continued the argument.

Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews is available for Game 7 with Bruins after sitting last 2 games

BOSTON (AP) — Maple Leafs star and NHL goal-scoring leader Auston Matthews is available for their Game 7 matchup with the Boston Bruins. Matthews missed the last two games while dealing with an unspecified illness and had just four shots combined in Games 3 and 4. He had the Game 2 winner for the Maples Leafs, who are tied with Boston 3-3 in the first-round series. Toronto also announced that goalie Joseph Woll will not play in Game 7 due to an injury sustained in Game 6. Ilya Samsonov will get the nod between the pipes in his place. Samsonov started the first four games of the series when Toronto fell into a 3-1 hole and was outscored 12-6.

Recovering from knee surgery, Finch in 2nd row of Timberwolves bench for series opener with Nuggets

DENVER (AP) — After having knee surgery, Minnesota coach Chris Finch was in the second row of the bench for Game 1 of a second-round series with Denver on Saturday night. Finch used crutches to attend his pregame news conference, and said his knee felt "pretty good, all things considered." Finch had his ruptured right patellar tendon repaired Wednesday after a sideline collision with Mike Conley late in the Game 4 win at Phoenix that gave the Timberwolves a series sweep. Assistant coach Micah Nori has taken over in Finch's absence.

Real Madrid wins its record-extending 36th Spanish league title after Barcelona loses at Girona

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Real Madrid has won its record-extending 36th Spanish league title after securing an insurmountable 13-point lead over second-place Girona with four games remaining. Madrid reclaimed the domestic crown after beating Cadiz 3-0 earlier Saturday and Barcelona then lost 4-2 at Girona. Only a victory by Barcelona would have stopped Madrid from celebrating. Madrid hosts Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday with their semifinal evenly balanced after a 2-2 first-leg draw in Germany.

Haaland scores 4 in another win for Man City. Arsenal isn't going away in the title race, though

Erling Haaland scored four goals in another win for Manchester City in its bid to capture an unprecedented fourth straight Premier League crown. Yet Arsenal isn't going away in this title race. Haaland has now at least a hat trick in six of his 63 matches in England's top flight after converting two penalties, powering in a header and curling home a sublime finish in City's 5-1 victory over Wolverhampton. It was a response to Arsenal's 3-0 win over Bournemouth a few hours earlier. Arsenal retained its one-point lead over City but the defending champions have three games left. That's one more than Arsenal. Burnley slipped closer to relegation with a 4-1 loss to Newcastle.

Cavaliers and Magic to settle playoff series standoff with Game 7 -- the 'best two words in sports'

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cavs and Magic are going to the limit. Unable to find a way to win on the road, Cleveland and Orlando will settle their series on Sunday with a Game 7, a fitting conclusion between two teams that have put their strengths and weaknesses on public display for six games. Only one advances to face the Boston Celtics, who will be well-rested for whichever team escapes this stalemate. The Magic forced Game 7 with a 103-96 at home on Friday night by withstanding a 50-point performance from Cleveland guard Donovan Mitchell.

Max Verstappen ties Alain Prost's record with 6th pole-winning run to open an F1 season

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Max Verstappen inched closer to a third consecutive win at the Miami Grand Prix on Saturday by continuing his long domination of Formula 1 qualifying. The three-time reigning F1 champion won his seventh consecutive pole, but first at Miami, where Verstappen failed to earn the top starting spot in the first two races around Hard Rock Stadium, yet still won them both. The pole-winning run tied Verstappen with Alain Prost in opening the season with six consecutive poles. Prost did it in 1993. Verstappen opened Saturday with a win in the sprint race and ended the day with his 38th career pole. The Red Bull driver beat the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. and will lead the field to green on Sunday for the first of F1's three races this year in the United States.
