HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters were called out at 12:48 a.m. Wednesday to the 600 block of Howard for a possible structure fire.

When they got there, they found nothing showing on the outside and entered to investigate. Inside, they found a very light haze of smoke and discovered a rechargeable battery that had overheated and melted in the front room of the home.

Units remained at the scene while the rest of the house, including the attic, was checked for fire extension. It turned out that the problem was limited to the battery and crews ventilated the smoke from the structure.

Reno County Communications and Hutchinson Police assisted at the scene.
