HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Monday, the Hutchinson Fire Department commemorated the 111th anniversary of the department's first Line of Duty Death, the passing of James O'Loughlin on April 15, 1913.

According to the department, the fire apparatus was responding from Fire Station 2 at 12 West Sixth to a fire on East Avenue A.

Driver Harry Hooper, Assistant Chief Ed Bulger in the front, Pipeman Jim O'Loughlin and Pipeman C.E. Nelson were standing tailboard. The fire engine was heading south and overturned at the corner of Main and Avenue A after a tire caught the trolley track during the turn.

All four firemen were thrown clear from the apparatus, with O'Loughlin striking his head when he landed. O'Loughlin was rushed to Stuart Hospital and never regained consciousness. He left behind a wife and 10 children.
