UPDATE: Inmate who died in Reno County custody identified

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The name of the person who died at the Reno County Correctional Facility has been released.

The Reno County Sheriff's Office identified him as Kenneth Wayne Smith.

Smith had been booked on a probation violation on a 2022 drug conviction on April 11.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Sheriff's Office reported Monday that an inmate died at the Reno County Correctional Facility on Sunday evening.

A report was made just after 6 p.m. that an inmate was in distress in his cell. Several Deputies immediately responded and began life-saving measures while Reno County EMS and Hutchinson Fire personnel were en route. Those measures were unsuccessful. 

The Reno County Sheriff's Office has called in the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to investigate the circumstances of the death.
