EL RENO,Okla.– TheHutchinsonCommunity College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the first day of the Cougar Classic atRedlandsCommunity College.
Hutchinsonopened the day with a 3-1 loss toNavarroCollege, 11-25, 21-25, 29-27, 17-25.Redlandsthen handedHCCa 3-1 loss, defeating the Lady Dragons 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 19-25.
HCC(2-5) will play Frank Phillips at9:30 a.m.and have a rematch with New Mexico Military at3:30 p.m.Hutchinson and New Mexico Military played last weekend.
Navarro, a team with a big, powerful front line, took charge with a decisive first-set victory and the Lady Dragons struggled for a while until taking the third set 29-17.
“They have some big swingers who can move and put the ball away,”HCChead coach Sarah Myers said. “They came out aggressive and intimidated us. We did realize that we could play with them and we took a set from them.”
Sophomore Jordan Rehm led the Lady Dragons with 11 kills and hitting a .269. Freshman Jade Nelson had a season-high eight kills on .222 hitting.
Setter Hayley Young finished with 21 assists. Libero Paige Forrester had a team-high 13 digs. The Lady Dragons posted 11 team blocks. Sophomore Cassie Wiley had six total blocks while Shayne Haley and Young had four each.
The Lady Dragons had 10 services aces from six different players.
AgainstRedlands, the Lady Dragons posted a season-high 87 digs, getting a season-high 23 from Forrester and a career-high 21 from Rehm. ButHCCwasn’t able to get its block going with only seven team blocks against the Cougars.
“We made a lot of mistakes and played down,” Myers said. “I’m fine with mistakes. We are human. We have to learn that after a mistake, we need to get over it and get the momentum back. That’s inexperience.”
Young nearly posted a triple-double with nine kills on .296 hitting with 28 set assists and 11 digs.
Haley had a team-high 10 kills on .296 hitting. Rehm and Nelson had nine kills each.
Freshman Alyssa Riffel tallied 15 digs. Haley had five total blocks.
