CHENEY, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs weathered a push by Cheney Diamond Dawgs in the third inning where Hutchinson Monarchs coughed up four runs, but Hutchinson Monarchs still won 12-7 on Thursday. Andrew Miller, Antonio Gauthier, and Ramon Vingochea all drove in runs in the frame.
Both pitching staffs had their hands full, frequently dealing with runners on base. Hutchinson Monarchs collected 13 hits and Cheney Diamond Dawgs had 11.
Hutchinson Monarchs opened up scoring in the first inning. Dylan Nedved grounded out into a double play, scoring one run.
In the top of the fourth inning, Hutchinson Monarchs tied things up at five when Jeremiah Ceasar grounded out, scoring one run.
After Hutchinson Monarchs scored two runs in the top of the ninth, Cheney Diamond Dawgs answered with two of their own. Hutchinson Monarchs scored when Tyler Miller induced Garrett Stephens to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored and Ryan Stoecklein doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. Cheney Diamond Dawgs then answered when Gauthiergrounded out, scoring one run and Matt Scheurich doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.
Hutchinson Monarchs took the lead for good with five runs in the fifth inning. In the fifth Brayden Whitchurch singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, Josh Danyliw induced Stephens to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored, Stoecklein drew a walk, scoring one run, and Jose Vasquez induced Mason Lowe to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored.
Matt Hopkins was on the pitcher’s mound for Hutchinson Monarchs. He went four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.
Braxton Webb led things off on the mound for Cheney Diamond Dawgs. He allowed five hits and four runs over three and a third innings, striking out four. Vasquez, Miller, and Danyliw each contributed in relief for Cheney Diamond Dawgs.
Hutchinson Monarchs racked up 13 hits. Taylor Barber, Jackson Loftin, Stoecklein, and Whitchurch all had multiple hits for Hutchinson Monarchs. Loftin and Barber each collected three hits to lead Hutchinson Monarchs.
Cheney Diamond Dawgs saw the ball well today, racking up 11 hits in the game. Wade Raburn, Scheurich, Jackson Glenn, and Miller each collected multiple hits for Cheney Diamond Dawgs. Cheney Diamond Dawgs didn’t commit a single error in the field. Miller had the most chances in the field with 12.
