WICHITA (AP) – Wichita police say a pedestrian who was struck and killed while crossing a downtown street was an 80-year-old homeless man.
Thomas Wimberly died at a hospital shortly after being hit by a car around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday while crossing Broadway in the middle of a block.
KSNW-TV 3 reports the motorist was driving about 30 mph and told police she didn’t see Wimberly.
Wichita police Lt. Joe Schroeder says investigators think Wimberly may have been hard of hearing.
Schroeder says the elderly man frequently went for an evening meal at The Lord’s Diner, which feeds the poor and homeless. Relatives told police that Wimberly didn’t want help from family members and often went to stay at shelters.
