Special Investigators for the Kansas Department of Corrections are continuing their investigation into the fire on Wednesday in the Segregation Unit at HCF’s Central Unit, the main prison facility in Hutchinson.
The fire was contained to one cell and the contents were damaged or destroyed. One inmate, in whose cell the fire was in, was treated for smoke inhalation at the facility clinic and is reported to have recovered.
Officials say in a news release that it appears that the fire was intentionally set. The cell is being repaired and is expected to be back in use by Friday.
At the conclusion of the investigation the report will be sent to the Reno County District Attorney’s Office for review.
They still have not released the name of the inmate involved.
