NICKERSON – A 22-yea-old Arkansas man was killed in a head-on crash with a semi Thursday afternoon near Nickerson. Dead is Michael Robert Benert, of Baxter, Arkansas.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Benert was heading toward Hutchinson traveling southeast on K-96 when he crossed the center line and crashed into the semi. He as driving a 2002 KIA.

The semi was driven by 57-year-old Kevin Clapp, of Lincoln, Nebraska. He was traveling northwest when the accident occurred and was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

The semi caught fire after the crash and there was some concern of a possible haz-mat situation with the semi towing a tanker trailer.

The accident was reported around 3 p.m., about a mile away from Nickerson, or right in front of Hedrick’s Exotic Animal Farm.

I do understand this crash was horrible, however, the detour from 56th was horrible. They were directing traffic to turn north on Wilson Road which is gravel when I see no reason why they couldn’t have been allowed to travel Yaggy Road. People not from the area would feel more comfortable on a paved road.

Why do you care about the detour? Do you realize a young man lost his life and he has parents and family that are grieving, who cares about having to go around!!!
My thoughts and prayers go out to all people affected by this horrible accident.
