That’s when the team found out it was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Poll.
The Lady Dragons (5-0) earned their highest national ranking ever in their eight-year history. Hutchinson has been ranked as high as No. 3 in on three different occasions, including its previous ranking last week. HCC had four of the five first-place votes this week.
The reason for the jump?
No. 1 Brevard and No. 2 Tyler both lost games over the weekend, while Hutchinson continued to dominate its early-season schedule. Last week, the Lady Dragons defeated Cloud County 7-0 and Independence 15-0. After Monday’s 5-0 victory at Hesston College, the Lady Dragons have outscored their opponents 47-0.
Tyler Junior College is No. 2 and Brevard is No. 3 this week. Brevard was ranked No. 1 last week Paradise Valley and Iowa Western round out the Top 5.
With a strong weekend – an overtime loss to Brevard and an overtime victory over Tyler, Butler jumps up three spots to No. 6. Johnson County took a tumble, dropping nine spots after a 1-0 loss to Illinois Central last weekend. The Cavaliers are No. 19.
Hutchinson defeated Hesston College 5-0 on Monday and will play at Pratt today in a Jayhawk Conference matchup. On Saturday Hutchinson plays host to Johnson County at 5:15 p.m. at the USD 308 Athletic Complex. The game time was changed from 3 p.m. to accommodate a middle school tournament also being played on Saturday at the complex.
