HCC Volleyball Plays Host To Dodge City To Open Region VI

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team has made great strides in head coach Sarah Myers’ second season.

So far, the Lady Dragons have made an eight-win improvement from 2010 and went 9-5 in the Jayhawk West, a four-game improvement in conference play. Hutchinson also returned to the upper division of the Jayhawk West and earned a first-round Region VI Tournament match.

The Lady Dragons (14-21) will play host to Dodge City (17-17) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Sports Arena. The winner advances to the Region VI Final Four on Saturday and Sunday at Newman University in Wichita.

Admission for Tuesday’s opening-round matchup will be $5 with preschoolers and HCC and Dodge City students with proper school ID allowed in free.

Tuesday’s match will be videostreamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at www.bluedragonsports.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.

Last Wednesday with home court for the first round at stake, Hutchinson rallied from a set down to defeat Dodge City in a five-set thriller, winning 18-16 in the fifth set after letting five match points slip through their fingers in the fourth set.

Hayley Young, HCC’s freshman setter, had a career-high 54 set assists. Sophomore Jordan Rehm had 18 kills, while freshman Kayla Karmazyn had a career-high 14 kills, sophomore Cassie Wiley had 13 kills and freshman Jade Nelson added 11 kills.

Chantal Birbaum had 16 kills to lead three Dodge City hitters in double figures in kills. Maggie Hans had 15 kills and Sherri Darden had 11 kills.

HCC swept the regular-season series with Dodge City this season, sweeping the Conquistadors on Sept. 27.

Hutchinson has been a very balanced offense all season long seven players averaging more than a kill per set. Rehm lead HCC with 2.41 kills per set and a .166 hitting percentage.

Freshman middle/outside Shayne Haley, who played only one set last week against Dodge City because of illness, is averaging 1.84 kills and hits .208. Sophomore middle Cassie Wiley averages 1.73 kills and hits .229.

Wiley is HCC’s leading blocker and has the fifth-most blocks in team history. She is averaging 1.17 kills. Haley averages 0.85 kills per set.

Rehm leads the Lady Dragons in digs with 3.26 digs per set. Freshman libero Paige Forrester averages 3.16 digs.

Young, who has two triple-doubles this season, is averaging 6.65 assists per set.

The Hutchinson-Dodge City winner will meet the Barton-Garden City winner at Noon on Saturday at Newman University. The Barton/Garden match will be played at Great Bend on Tuesday.

In other first-round matchups on Tuesday: Pratt is at Seward County and Cloud County is at second-seeded Colby.
