With President Trump’s signature, the wide-ranging reconciliation package—referred to by some as the “Big Beautiful Bill”—has officially become law, delivering long-overdue relief for Kansas farmers and rural communities.

While much of the public attention focused on other provisions, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, highlighted how the law incorporates key elements of the long-delayed Farm Bill—provisions that are vital to the state’s agricultural backbone.

“This legislation includes the bulk of what’s traditionally known as Title One of the Farm Bill—the safety net that helps farmers keep going when market conditions make it nearly impossible to turn a profit,” Moran said in a recent interview. “This is something they can take to their bankers to secure financing and get operations moving for the new year.”

It has been seven years since the last Farm Bill was passed in 2018. In the interim, Kansas farmers have faced rising input costs for fuel, fertilizer, labor, and interest, while commodity prices have remained low. Moran said the resulting economic pressure has left many producers operating at a loss.

“The agricultural sectors in Kansas are getting squeezed,” Moran said. “This new law offers stability at a time when it's desperately needed.”

Moran also noted recent discussions with farm advocacy groups—including representatives from the soybean, sorghum, corn, and grain industries—who visited Capitol Hill to stress the urgency of relief. “Even if you're not a farmer, communities across Kansas depend on agriculture. Towns like Sylvia or Larned are deeply tied to whether or not local farmers are successful,” he said.

Alongside the new law, farmers are also benefiting from emergency disaster assistance passed by Congress last December. That funding is now available through local Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices and includes support for both weather-related losses and broader economic hardships.

“While recent rains have eased drought conditions in much of the state, the long-term damage remains,” Moran said. “Programs like this are making a real difference on the ground right now.”

The legislation also marks progress in a longstanding policy goal for Moran—permanently repealing the federal estate tax, commonly referred to as the “death tax,” for family farms and small businesses.

“Too many families have been forced to sell land or assets just to pay taxes after the death of a loved one,” Moran said. “These are businesses that are asset-rich but not necessarily income-rich. The new law helps ensure family operations can continue into the next generation without being penalized.”

Moran called the new law “a lifeline for Kansas,” and said its impact will be felt not just in the fields, but across every small town and rural community that depends on a strong and stable farm economy.

“Whether you live in Hutchinson or a town of a few hundred people, if agriculture suffers, the entire community feels it,” he said. “This law brings much-needed security to our farmers—and by extension, to all of Kansas.”

Three-day weather outlook 

Hutchinson City Councilman Scott Meggers discussed a wide range of ongoing city projects and priorities in a recent interview, highlighting progress on local infrastructure, budget decisions, and economic development efforts.&nbsp;

Among the positive updates, Meggers said construction on the downtown hotel and the Landmark Apartments is moving forward on schedule. The Landmark project is set to open next year, while the hotel could open as soon as late 2025.&nbsp;

“We’re really excited to see these projects taking shape. It’s great news for downtown revitalization,”&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;said.&nbsp;

Facing budget pressures, Meggers confirmed that city leadership is reviewing expenses to maintain services without increasing the revenue-neutral rate. City Manager Enrico Pacheco has been examining possible cuts, including delaying vehicle purchases and evaluating positions that may not be replaced following retirements.&nbsp;

“You don’t want to make cuts, but sometimes you have to find areas to scale back that won’t disrupt operations,”&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;explained.&nbsp;

Wastewater Treatment Plant, Infrastructure Needs&nbsp;

Council members recently toured Hutchinson’s aging wastewater treatment facility.&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;said the city’s engineering team is evaluating needed repairs and upgrades to bring the plant up to modern standards.&nbsp;

Additional infrastructure work is also underway, including ongoing improvements at the Woody Seat Freeway project. Meggers said wet weather and recently approved bridge work may cause some delays but that progress is steady.&nbsp;

Economic Development Role Reimagined&nbsp;

Meggers&nbsp;expressed support for a proposed joint economic development position between the city and the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce. He said the move could streamline efforts to attract businesses and encourage coordination between the city, chamber, and county.&nbsp;

“I used to work at the chamber, and I saw how often efforts were happening in silos,” he said. “Bringing that role into the city can help us move faster when new opportunities come up.”&nbsp;

Dangerous Structures, Property Cleanup&nbsp;

The council continues to address dangerous and unsafe structures across the city.&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;praised progress at the “worm farm,” a previously neglected property that’s now been removed from the unsafe structure list after compliance with city requests.&nbsp;

At the August 5 city council meeting, 10 more properties are on the agenda for review, with some already opting for demolition or applying for permits.&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;emphasized the importance of property upkeep for safety and beautification.&nbsp;

The next Hutchinson City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 5 at City Hall.&nbsp;

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran says reforms in the newly passed budget reconciliation bill—commonly referred to as the “Big Beautiful Bill”—include critical protections for rural Kansas healthcare and reinforce long-term access to Medicare and Medicaid for Kansans.

Speaking in a recent interview from Washington, Moran said concerns about potential cuts to Medicare are unfounded.

“It was pretty much hands off. Don’t touch Medicare,” Moran stated. “There’s nothing in this bill that negatively affects seniors currently receiving Medicare benefits.”

However, the legislation does introduce future reforms to Medicaid eligibility. Moran explained that individuals applying for Medicaid in the future—not current recipients—must meet new work requirements and legal residency standards.

“Applicants must be in the country legally and must be willing to work if they are able to.” he said. "The work requirement is 80 hours a month, unless they're students or caregivers."

Moran, a senior member of the Senate Agriculture and Appropriations Committees, emphasized the bill’s significance to rural healthcare. He said ensuring continued Medicaid funding was vital to keeping rural hospitals and clinics open—especially in Kansas.

“Keeping our hospital doors open, our pharmacies on Main Street, and our medical professionals in rural communities is essential,” he said. “Without them, seniors can’t stay in their hometowns, and young families won’t choose to move there.”

Moran highlighted a key provision that delays previously proposed Medicaid reimbursement cuts until 2028. That delay, along with new language in the bill, allows Kansas to continue applying for enhanced Medicaid funding passed earlier by the state legislature.

He said the bill secures up to $4.9 billion in additional Medicaid reimbursements for Kansas over the next 10 years, including specific support for critical access hospitals in rural areas.

“We designed it so Kansas could still benefit from programs already in motion, while also opening the door to new federal dollars,” Moran said.

The legislation also creates a newly funded national program aimed at bolstering rural hospitals, with Kansas expected to receive a significant share.

In closing, Moran reiterated his commitment to preserving healthcare access in rural communities:

“Whether it's Medicare, Medicaid, or general health services, I’m all in on making sure Kansans—especially in our small towns—have access to care close to home.”

A swift water rescue operation on Monday afternoon resulted in three individuals being safely rescued from the Arkansas River in Hutchinson.

According to a press release from the Hutchinson Fire Department, emergency crews were dispatched around 2:30 p.m. on July 28 to the area behind Hobart-Detter Field at Carey Park. The individuals had become stranded in the river and were clinging to a tree amid rapidly rising water levels and strong currents.

HFD's water rescue team quickly deployed a boat and launched a three-person team upriver to reach the victims. The rescue was completed without incident, and the individuals were brought back upstream to a safe access point, where they were transferred to Reno County EMS for evaluation.

The operation was completed within approximately 30 minutes of the initial call. No injuries were reported among the victims or first responders.

Fire officials reminded the public that a flood warning remains in effect and urged residents to exercise caution. “Never drive through water-covered roads. River currents are swifter than usual, and the river edges are soft,” the release stated.

The Hutchinson Fire Department extended thanks to Reno County EMS, Reno County Sheriff’s Office, Hutchinson Police Department, and Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications for their support in the successful rescue.

Three rescued from river

MARC JACOBS Hutch Post&nbsp; The USD 308 Board of Education approved a new teacher contract with NEA-Hutchinson on Monday evening, along with several facility upgrades and agreements with community partners.

The newly ratified agreement increases the base salary for district teachers by $2,900. Starting pay for a new teacher with a bachelor’s degree will now be $49,500. Experienced educators holding a master’s degree plus 60 credit hours and 16 years of service could earn up to $74,799. The district will also contribute $615 per month toward employee health insurance premiums.

The contract also establishes supplemental stipends for coaching and extracurricular activity roles, ranging from $723 for an assistant Key Club sponsor to $8,062 for the high school head football coach.

In other action, the board approved the district’s Cardiac Emergency Plan and greenlit multiple facility improvement projects. These include the $29,667.55 purchase of a rooftop HVAC unit for the Hutchinson High School north gym and $25,667.55 for solar shades to be installed in 20 classrooms at Faris Elementary, which includes the removal of existing blinds.

The board also approved a slate of partnership agreements with local and regional organizations. These include the Boys &amp; Girls Club of Hutchinson, ESSDACK, JAG-K, McAdams Academy, Reno County Education Cooperative #610, Salthawk Community Support at Trinity United Methodist Church, United Way of Reno County, and a swimming pool rental agreement with the YMCA.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Wide receiver Marquise Brown was among several Kansas City Chiefs who left practice with an injury Tuesday, when the nearly 2 1/2-hour workout was conducted in temperatures that produced a triple-digit heat index by its conclusion.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that Brown, who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, had hurt his ankle early in the practice. Brown was sitting up while he was driven in a cart from the practice fields to the locker room.

“I haven't seen him yet but they took him up. I don't think it's too bad but we'll see,” Reid said.

“Hollywood” Brown was among several wide receivers who got dinged up. Second-year standout Xavier Worthy “banged his head,” Reid said, but returned to the practice field. And 2022 second-round pick Skyy Moore, who at this point appears to be a longshot to make the roster out of training camp, also left practice with a hamstring injury.

Others who missed time included fifth-round pick Jeffrey Bassa (ankle sprain), tight end Jake Briningstool (hamstring), linebacker Cooper McDonald (illness) and defensive backs Deon Bush (hamstring), Eric Scott Jr. (hamstring) and Darius Rush (hamstring).

Kristian Fulton, who signed a two-year, $20 million deal in free agency, remains on the PUP list with a knee issue.

“It's hard work. You're out there in the heat. It's tough," said Reid, who soaked through his windbreaker with sweat, “but the guys battled through. I appreciate the tempo they set and all the energy that they gave.”

In one case, a bit too much energy. First-round pick Josh Simmons, who appears to have the inside track on the starting left tackle spot, got into a shoving match with third-round choice Ashton Gillotte, who is trying to earn snaps at defensive end. The dust-up led to a couple of punches being thrown before Reid and other players intervened.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Nearly six years ago, when the Kansas City Chiefs were just beginning their rise to prominence, Chris Jones tweaked a muscle in practice bad enough that coach Andy Reid made the difficult decision to hold him out of a playoff game against Houston.

Jones wanted to play. In fact, he tried to push through the injury in warmups. But Reid was steadfast, and the Chiefs didn't need him in the end. After spotting the Texans a 24-0 lead, Patrick Mahomes &amp; Co. caught fire, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/1129919fad337ff1d482dc02cb5a4059">Kansas City rolled to a 51-31 victory</a>. And when Jones returned the next week,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/6dc66c81f740e1534e351b8250791c2f#:~:text=By%20DAVE%20SKRETTA,the%20Chiefs%20in%20Week%2010.">the Chiefs handily beat the Titans</a>&nbsp;for the AFC championship — two wins that ultimately propelled them to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/san-francisco-49ers-sports-general-super-bowl-football-ap-top-news-8f6178fbfa3844677b5fc374bc53b80f">their first Super Bowl title</a>&nbsp;in five decades.

It turns out the backstory to the injury explains a lot about why Jones, now&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-chris-jones-5f562ac65a27dda647fe94a39df9d7e9">a 31-year-old veteran</a>&nbsp;preparing for his 10th season in the league, has become a three-time All-Pro and one of the game's premier defensive players.

He's competitive. He's relentless. And he doesn't suffer fools gladly.

You see, in practice, hitting the quarterback is strictly verboten. It's why QBs usually wear a different-colored jersey, yellow in the case of Kansas City. Yet pulling back as a defender whose instincts are honed to bring down whomever has the ball can be a difficult challenge, even more so when it's Patrick Mahomes dancing around the pocket, almost as if he's mocking you.

“So we were in a battle,” Jones recalled, after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-training-camp-3bda8270013a5f3376dcf92b20644c4f">a recent training camp practice</a>&nbsp;in the brutal heat and humidity that seems to engulf Missouri Western State University this time of year, "and I had to show Pat that I can really catch you.

“I just chill,” — usually, Jones added— “because we have to stay 5 to 10 yards away from the quarterback. And it got serious one day, and I ended up pulling a (muscle). And I was like: ‘You know what, Pat? You got it.’”

Yes, the affable Jones had been so competitive that, even in a midweek practice against his own teammates, he managed to hurt himself before what to that point had been the most important game of a championship season.

“Now,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said, “we've got a special rule for Chris on that.”

The so-called Chris Rule is quite simple: Once he beats the offensive line in practice, he must stand there.

“Patrick does some crazy stuff back there. It gets very competitive,” Jones said, sounding downright exasperated. “You know you can't touch the quarterback, so the quarterback can stand and hold the ball for five or six seconds during the play.”

You can see how that could become annoying. Even infuriating.

Fortunately for Jones, there are no Chris Rules when games begin. And that is decidedly unfortunate for opposing QBs, who have become keenly aware of his game-wrecking ability. Jones followed a 15 1/2-sack season three years ago and 10 1/2 the next with five sacks last season, a number made more modest only because the 6-foot-6, 310-pound Jones was faced with constant double- and triple-teams, and those in turn allowed many of his teammates to get to the quarterback instead.

George Karlaftis had eight sacks last season, helping to earn him a four-year, $93 million deal a couple of weeks ago. Tershawn Wharton produced a career-best 6 1/2, which earned him a three-year, $30 million contract with Carolina.

“I've watched (Jones) over the years,” said Jerry Tillery, who signed with the Chiefs in the offseason to play alongside him, “and that's somebody at the top of our game who's doing it the best. To watch this guy work and to be with him — I think that type of player is somebody who can raise everybody's level.”

Jones acknowledged that his game has had to evolve over the years, especially the past six, since those days of trying to chase Mahomes around practice. He still is one of the strongest players in the league, capable of beating a woebegone offensive lineman with brute force, but he now has the priceless benefit of experience on his side.

His explosive athletic ability paired with some nuance and craft has made for quite a combination.

“I mean, he’s as dynamic as they come,” Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady said.

On the superheated training fields of Missouri Western, about an hour's drive north of Arrowhead Stadium, that dynamism can still last only as long as it takes Jones to beat the man in front of him — sometimes a fraction of a second. Then, according to the Chris Rules, Jones will dutifully stand up and watch the rest of the play unfold.

“Over time,” Jones said, “you get to see the younger guys are faster. You're a little slower. You don't move the same. So you have to cherish these moments. Cherish these individuals you get to battle with every day, and enjoy the practice.”

As the Royals celebrated the stability that&nbsp;extending Seth Lugo&nbsp;brings to their rotation now and in the future, they were also balancing the news that they’ll be without another starter for the rest of 2025.&nbsp;

Kris Bubic&nbsp;will miss the remainder of the season as he recovers from a left rotator cuff strain, the Royals announced on Monday. Bubic was&nbsp;placed on the 15-day injured list&nbsp;on Sunday following his 2 2/3-inning start against the Guardians on Saturday night, an outing in which he walked four consecutive batters to start the game and said afterward that “physically, something’s not right.”&nbsp;

The Royals do not believe Bubic’s injury will require surgery, but he does need extended rest. He’ll be shut down until at least October, but that timeline does give him a healthy offseason if everything stays on track and the further evaluation Bubic will receive in the coming days matches what he’s learned in the past 24 hours.&nbsp;

“It sucks,” Bubic said. “I mean, especially coming off a fairly recent rehab experience not too long ago. So it is what it is. I mean, sometimes your body just says, ‘No.’ But kind of looking back, it’s still fairly fresh, but I can’t be mad about how the season went from an overall standpoint.”&nbsp;

Bubic, a&nbsp;first-time All-Star this year, ends his season with a 2.55 ERA across 20 starts and 116 1/3 innings. In his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, the lefty blossomed into one of the Royals’ best starters. He earned American League Pitcher of the Month honors in May with a 0.56 ERA and was sticking around in the AL Cy Young conversation, with his season ERA ranking fifth among AL starters at the time of his injury.&nbsp;

“It’s no fun to hear [about the injury] for us or for him,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “... I feel badly for Kris. This is two out of three years that he’s had an injury that ends his season. But he’s a competitor. He’s a guy that’s already going to start to think about how he can get back and be better.”&nbsp;

Bubic said after his start on Saturday that he had been managing some shoulder pain for a “good portion of the season.” But it took a turn for the worse during his five scoreless innings in Miami on July 20. He attributed the velocity drop to being sick earlier that weekend coming off the All-Star break.&nbsp;

Then on Saturday, he couldn’t command the ball and barely reached 90 mph with his fastball.&nbsp;

Regarding whether Bubic should have taken further precautions in the earlier part of the season, he said he “doesn’t regret anything of how I handled it earlier in the year.”&nbsp;

“I was bouncing back fine,” Bubic said. “Velo, command, all that stuff was stable and the results were good and the process was good. There were really no red flags in my mind. There were no red flags from anybody coming to me about anything. Not until essentially this last week, between Miami and the other day. That was when, ‘OK, you see the velo drop, you see the command all over the place.’ Those are some pretty obvious red flags.&nbsp;

“… We’re competitive athletes. We want to pitch. We want to be out there if we feel like we can pitch. Like I said, given the way most of the season had went, it’s hard to pull the plug on it. As long as it stayed manageable, which it was for a very long time, that was fine with me.”&nbsp;

Bubic knows how to attack a long rehab, and this figures to be much shorter than the grueling year-plus he spent recovering from elbow surgery. Still, it’s a devastating blow to the Royals’ rotation that already has two other starters from their Opening Day rotation on the IL in Cole Ragans (left rotator cuff strain) and Michael Lorenzen (left oblique strain).&nbsp;

Both are expected to pitch again this season, Lorenzen closer than Ragans, whose rotator cuff strain is in a “different spot,” than Bubic’s and therefore not as severe. Ragans has been playing catch and is a week or two away from his first bullpen, so he still has a bit to go before he gets back into games.&nbsp;

Bubic to miss rest of season with rotator cuff strain 

The Hutchinson Monarchs suffered the first loss of the NBC World Series on Monday evening falling to the Seattle Studs 9-5.  

Despite collecting 10 hits to the Studs’ 11, the Monarchs struggled to capitalize on their opportunities. Dylan Bell led Hutchinson with two RBIs, while Jaden Gustafson, Jake Gutierrez, and JJ Spafford each notched two hits in the loss. 

Pryce Bender started on the mound for the Monarchs, surrendering six runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds innings. Kyle Holzer impressed in relief, striking out five over two innings while allowing just two hits and one unearned run. 

Seattle first baseman Jackson Copeland delivered a standout performance at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, a run scored, and a walk, earning Player of the Game honors. Catcher Kai Halstead also made a significant impact, finishing 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a solo home run, an RBI, and a walk. 

With the win, the Studs remain undefeated in tournament play and will carry momentum into the knockout stage. Hutchinson, now 2-1 in pool play, will look to regroup moving forward.

The Seattle Blackfins have clinched the final qualification place in Pool A, after defeating MVP Oklahoma 7-5. Paxton Bigby and Brody Blum led the way for the Blackfins, each driving in two runs. Brayden Larson was 2-3 for the Blackfins also driving in a run.   

In a game that came down to the wire, Stars third baseman Joe Anderson drove in two runs on a grounder through the gap, giving the Stars an 11-10 walk off victory over the Dodge City A’s. 

In a battle for the top seed in Pool A, the Hays Larks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back, winning 7-4. Taber Stokes continued his great play with a double in the 5th for the Larks, while Lane Sparks and Trent Baker both swiped two bases. Nolan Wilson got the start for the Larks, throwing 5 innings, giving up 5 hits, 1 run, walking 5 batters, and striking out 3. 

Monarchs downed by Studs, await next opponent

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr., Marcell Ozuna and Austin Riley homered as the Atlanta Braves snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals, who equaled a club record by walking 14 batters Monday night.

It was the fourth time the Royals walked 14 and the first since 2006.

Acuña hit a two-run homer, his 14th, in the third and an inning later Ozuna added another two-run shot, also his 14th. Riley hit a solo homer, his 15th, in the seventh — and his three-run double in the eighth made it 9-3.

Spencer Strider (5-8) pitched five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Raisel Iglesias squelched a Royals rally in the ninth for his 12th save.

Six of Kansas City's walks were issued by Rich Hill (0-2), who went four innings and gave up four runs and four hits. It was the second start of 2025 for the 45-year-old Hill after making his season debut with the Royals last Tuesday. It was also Hill’s 250th career start and 388th appearance in his 21st season.

Randal Grichuk hit his eighth homer, his first with the Royals since being acquired from Arizona on Saturday. Bobby Witt Jr. hit two doubles and leads the majors with 36. Maikel Garcia had two doubles among his three hits.

Royals catcher Salvador Perez was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-royals-salvador-perez-9a119dc57d34070ee0714048fff93a6b">hit on the left elbow by a pitch</a>&nbsp;in the third and later left the game with a bruise.

After the Royals scored two runs with none out in the ninth, Iglesias came in and gave up a sacrifice fly before securing the victory.

The Braves had nine hits, six for extra bases.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman involved in an altercation with a Kansas sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop is going to prison.

On Tuesday, Judge Christopher Magana sentenced 22-year-old Nevaeh Thompson of Wichita, to 45 months in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. She will also serve 36 months of post-release supervision. In May, Thompson pleaded guilty to aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. March 2, a Sedgwick County Deputy conducted a traffic stop near Lincoln and Rock Road.&nbsp; The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Thompson. During the stop, Thompson informed the deputy that she might have outstanding warrants for her arrest. Before she could be taken into custody, Thompson quickly jumped back into her vehicle in an attempt to flee.

The deputy followed her into the vehicle, trying to prevent her escape. However, Thompson managed to shift the car into drive and sped away, dragging the deputy a short distance.

The deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident. Thompson’s vehicle was later found abandoned in the 7300 block of E. Indianapolis. Surveillance footage from a nearby residence shows Thompson running from the vehicle.&nbsp; Thompson was arrested five days after the incident.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate confirmed former Trump lawyer&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/emil-bove-trump-fbi-enforcer-firings-3f85887e92154b14f7e04cfc521a0399">Emil Bove</a>&nbsp;50-49 for a lifetime appointment as a federal appeals court judge Tuesday as Republicans dismissed whistleblower complaints about his conduct at the Justice Department. Kansas U.S. Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall voted with the majority.

A former federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, Bove was on Trump’s legal team during his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-trial-deliberations-jury-testimony-verdict-85558c6d08efb434d05b694364470aa0">New York hush money trial</a>&nbsp;and defended Trump in the two federal criminal cases. He will serve on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which hears cases from Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Democrats have vehemently opposed Bove’s nomination, citing his current position as a top Justice Department official and his role in the dismissal of the corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. They have also criticized his efforts to investigate department officials who were involved in the prosecutions of hundreds of Trump supporters who were involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Bove has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-fbi-justice-department-jan-6-ff003e46ea48c4e8be710d1ba2eb2d02">accused FBI officials of “insubordination”</a>&nbsp;for refusing to hand over the names of agents who investigated the attack and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-fbi-firing-a7b19a5f414ce82c6f6b5f6656000d23">ordered the firing</a>&nbsp;of a group of prosecutors involved in those Jan. 6 criminal cases.

Whistleblowers cite evidence against Bove

Democrats have also cited evidence from whistleblowers, a fired department lawyer who said last month that Bove had suggested the Trump administration&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/justice-department-emil-bove-judge-deportations-trump-3800859fc5035bfa7f091ebc97711fb8">may need to ignore judicial commands</a>&nbsp;— a claim that Bove&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bove-justice-department-judge-nomination-trump-efea8c93ad892f1eb000321939a7283c">denies</a>&nbsp;— and new evidence from a whistleblower who did not go public. That whistleblower recently provided an audio recording of Bove that runs contrary to some of his testimony at his confirmation hearing last month, according to two people familiar with the recording.

The audio is from a private video conference call at the Department of Justice in February in which Bove, a top official at the department, discussed his handling of the dismissed case against Adams, according to transcribed quotes from the audio reviewed by The Associated Press.

The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the whistleblower has not made the recording public. The whistleblower’s claims were first reported by the Washington Post.

None of that evidence has so far been enough to sway Senate Republicans — all but two of them voted to confirm Bove as GOP senators have deferred to Trump on virtually all of his picks.

Democrats say Bove’s confirmation is a ‘dark day’

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said that Bove’s confirmation is a “dark day” and that Republicans are only supporting Bove because of his loyalty to the president.

“It’s unfathomable that just over four years after the insurrection at the Capitol, when rioters smashed windows, ransacked offices, desecrated this chamber, Senate Republicans are willingly putting someone on the bench who shielded these rioters from facing justice, who said their prosecution was a grave national injustice,” Schumer said.

Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted against Bove’s confirmation. “I don’t think that somebody who has counseled other attorneys that you should ignore the law, you should reject the law, I don’t think that that individual should be placed in a lifetime seat on the bench,” Murkowski said Tuesday.

At his confirmation hearing last month, Bove addressed criticism of his tenure head-on, telling lawmakers he understands some of his decisions “have generated controversy.” But Bove said he has been inaccurately portrayed as Trump’s “henchman” and “enforcer” at the department.

Senators at the Judiciary Committee hearing asked Bove about the February 14 call with lawyers in the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section, which had received significant public attention because of his unusual directive that the attorneys had an hour to decide among themselves who would agree to file on the department’s behalf the motion to dismiss the case against Adams.

The call was convened amid significant upheaval in the department as prosecutors in New York who’d handled the matter, as well as some in Washington, resigned rather than agree to dispense with the case.

According to the transcript of the February call, Bove remarked near the outset that interim Manhattan U.S. Attorney&nbsp;<a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25526481-sassoon-letter/" target="_blank">Danielle Sassoon</a>&nbsp;“resigned about ten minutes before we were going to put her on leave pending an investigation.” But when asked at the hearing whether he had opened the meeting by emphasizing that Sassoon and another prosecutor had refused to follow orders and that Sassoon was going to be reassigned before she resigned, Bove answered with a simple, “No.”

At another moment, Bove said he did not recall saying words that the transcript of the call reflects him as having said — that whoever signed the motion to dismiss the Adams case would emerge as leaders of the section.

Republicans decry ‘unfair accusations’

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said Tuesday that he believes Bove will be a “diligent, capable and fair jurist.”

He said his staff had tried to investigate the claims but that lawyers for the whistleblowers would not give them all of the materials they had asked for. The “vicious rhetoric, unfair accusations and abuse directed at Mr. Bove” have “crossed the line,” Grassley said.

The first whistleblower complaint against Bove came from a former Justice Department lawyer who was fired in April after conceding in court that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abrego-garcia-deportation-error-c0a515baffdf54baba412edf4cdbd310">Kilmar Abrego Garcia</a>, a Salvadoran man who had been living in Maryland, was mistakenly deported to an El Salvador prison.

That lawyer, Erez Reuveni, described efforts by top Justice Department officials in the weeks before his firing to stonewall and mislead judges to carry out deportations championed by the White House.

Reuveni described a Justice Department meeting in March concerning Trump’s plans to invoke&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/alien-enemies-trump-immigration-deportations-21a62ede23b8c493b60d00a9c125722f">the Alien Enemies Act</a>&nbsp;over what the president claimed was an invasion by the Venezuelan gang&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tren-de-aragua-gang-venezuela-trump-40ec0390047c2b17e961dd029da02e65">Tren de Aragua</a>. Reuveni said Bove raised the possibility that a court might block the deportations before they could happen. Reuveni claims Bove used a profanity in saying the department would need to consider telling the courts what to do and “ignore any such order,” Reuveni’s lawyers said in the filing.

Bove said he has “no recollection of saying anything of that kind.”

KANSAS CITY —Authorities are investigating the cause of a house fire in Kansas City.

Just before 12:30p.m. Tuesday, crews&nbsp;responded to a reported house fire in 7700 block of E. 113th street in Kansas City, Missouri, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins. 

Crews reported heavy smoke from a single-story residence on arrival.&nbsp; Searches of the structure came back all clear. The occupants were able to self-evacuate. KCFD contained the fire to the kitchen. No injuries were reported at this incident. Red Cross ordered for two adults and one infant.&nbsp;

A tsunami sent powerful waves toward coastal areas of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/japan-russia-kamchatka-earthquake-tsunami-warning-a88cbe8a1e985cff54dc0ad849ea5ddb">Russia’s Kuril Islands, Japan and Hawaii and Alaska</a>&nbsp;after a powerful, 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia early Wednesday. Warnings are also in place for Alaska and other coasts south toward New Zealand.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said a tsunami as high as 60 centimeters (2 feet) had been detected as the waves moved south along the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Tokyo Bay. Officials urged caution, saying that bigger waves could come later.

Damage and evacuations were reported in the Russian regions nearest the quake’s epicenter on the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/volcanoes-international-f1d957fb1c4c48c5845b751b2f45d255">Kamchatka Peninsula</a>&nbsp;and officials declared a state of emergency in several areas.
